What is the PANOS panoramic night vision goggle?

The GPNVG-18 is the quad-tube panoramic NVG issued to US Special Operations Forces. The PANOS uses the same four-tube fan-configuration architecture. Why does field of view matter, and what does 97° give you?
A standard binocular NVG gives approximately 40° per eye: roughly the field of view of a pair of binoculars. Peripheral vision in the normal human eye extends to roughly 170–180° total. Standard NVGs reduce that dramatically. At 97°+, the PANOS provides approximately half of natural peripheral coverage: enough that pedestrians and vehicles approaching from the side register in the operator's peripheral field rather than requiring a head turn to check. For CQB, vehicle operation, and complex terrain navigation, this matters operationally. Threat recognition from the periphery, without having to sweep the head, is the specific capability gain.
Who uses quad-tube panoramic night vision?
Quad-tube panoramic NVG was developed for and is most widely used by US SOCOM: units that need maximum peripheral situational awareness for CQB, vehicle operation, fast-rope insertion, and complex terrain navigation. Law enforcement tactical units, particularly those doing vehicle-based operations and building clearance, are the primary LE users. Serious civilian users include large-property security, livestock operations on large acreage, and professional operators who use NVGs for sustained operational work rather than occasional recreational use.
How is the PANOS priced relative to a dual-tube binocular?
The PANOS requires four Gen 3 image intensifier tubes: four times the tube cost of a monocular and roughly double the tube cost of a dual-tube binocular. Price varies by tube grade and manufacturer. Grade B tube configurations offer the best balance of documented performance and cost for most buyers. Grade A all-around is the highest-performing configuration.
