NOPTIC NV3 Thermal Camera — Patrol-Ready, Pan & Tilt From Inside the Vehicle
Spotlight-mounted. Pan and tilt from inside the car. Thermal detection to 500 yards. The suspect doesn't know you're looking.
Contact for LE PricingThermal Where You Need It
The NOPTIC NV3 replaces your patrol vehicle's spotlight head with a thermal imaging camera that you aim from inside the vehicle using the existing spotlight handle. No new mount. No new controls. Officers scan large areas in total darkness, detect heat signatures up to 500 yards out, and locate suspects without activating the spotlight — and without the suspect knowing they've been seen. Output feeds directly to your MDT, laptop, or in-car monitor.
See Without Being Seen
The moment you hit your spotlight, the suspect knows exactly where you are and where you're looking. The NOPTIC eliminates that problem. Thermal requires no visible light — you scan the scene in complete darkness, locate the target, then illuminate on your terms. The element of surprise stays with you.
Always Mounted. Always Ready.
Handheld thermal imagers spend most of their time in the trunk. The NOPTIC is permanently mounted and operational every time the vehicle is on patrol. No retrieving gear. No setup time. When a situation develops, the camera is already pointed at the scene.
Direct MDT and Laptop Integration
The NV3 outputs digital video via USB directly to Windows-based MDT and laptop systems — no capture dongle required. Video records continuously, date and time stamped. Compatible with Windows, Mac, and Android. Evidence captured and ready without additional hardware.
Two Cars. One Thermal. Coordinated Tactics.
One patrol car with NOPTIC scans a suspect on foot while driving past — no spotlight, no alert, no indication the vehicle is even looking. The NOPTIC car radios coordinates to a second unit, which moves directly to the location and hits the spotlight when right on top of the suspect. This tactic has been proven in the field by departments running NOPTIC systems. It works because the suspect has no idea he's already been located. That's what thermal gives you — the ability to know before they know you know.
Thermal vs. Night Vision — What Law Enforcement Actually Needs to Know
Night vision image intensifiers and thermal cameras are frequently confused for each other or treated as interchangeable. They are not. A night vision image intensifier amplifies existing visible and near-infrared light to produce a visible image. A thermal camera detects infrared radiation — heat — and renders it as an image based on temperature differences between objects and their background. The two technologies produce completely different kinds of information and have different operational strengths.
Night vision image intensifiers need ambient light. Even the best Gen 3 tube needs starlight or moonlight to produce a usable image. In complete darkness — a windowless building, an overcast rural night — the image intensifier is working near its limits and performance drops. Thermal has no such limitation. A human body at 98.6°F radiates heat regardless of whether there is any light present. Thermal works in complete darkness as effectively as under bright sunlight.
Thermal also penetrates conditions that defeat image intensifiers. Light fog scatters visible and near-infrared wavelengths, degrading image intensifier performance. Thermal, detecting longer-wavelength infrared radiation, performs substantially better in light fog. The NOPTIC NV3's built-in lens heater auto-activates below 40°F to prevent condensation on the optical surface during cold-weather operations, extending reliable performance through the conditions a patrol unit is most likely to encounter in winter months.
The operational advantage of vehicle-mounted thermal is the element of surprise. When an officer turns on a spotlight, the subject sees the light source, knows exactly where it is coming from, and knows they have been seen. Thermal requires no visible light. The officer can observe a subject in total darkness, follow their movement, determine their location precisely, and communicate that location to approaching units — all without the subject knowing they are under observation. The moment the spotlight comes on, it comes on right on top of the subject. That is the tactic the NOPTIC NV3 is built to enable.
The 500-yard detection range is for a standing human heat signature in typical conditions. At 500 yards on a 640x480 sensor with a 21° field of view, the subject will appear as a thermal blob — detectable and locatable, but not identifiable. At 100–200 yards, the image resolves enough for identification. This distinction matters for tactics: the NOPTIC gives you location at distance and identity at closer range. The practical operational cycle is: detect at range, approach in the dark with thermal guidance, illuminate when close. The suspect never knows the approach is happening until it has already succeeded.

Frequently Asked Questions — NOPTIC NV3 Thermal Camera
What is the NOPTIC NV3 thermal camera?
The NOPTIC NV3 PSV-3000 is a spotlight-mounted thermal imaging camera designed for law enforcement patrol vehicles. It replaces or co-mounts with the existing vehicle spotlight head and detects human heat signatures at distances up to 500 yards. The officer aims the camera from inside the vehicle using the existing spotlight handle — no stepping out, no spotlighting the scene, no alerting the subject. Video feeds directly to the MDT, laptop, or in-car monitor via USB (digital) or RCA (analog). The NV3 operates in complete darkness, fog, and conditions where standard image intensifier night vision would not function.
Can civilians buy the NOPTIC NV3?
No. The NOPTIC NV3 is an ITAR-controlled thermal imaging system sold to law enforcement agencies and qualifying government entities only. It is not available for general civilian sale. If you are a department procurement officer or authorized government purchaser, contact Adams Industries (CAGE 1SMP2) to discuss eligibility, demo units, and LE/government pricing. Adams Industries supports both direct purchase and contract procurement.
How far can the NOPTIC NV3 detect a heat signature?
The NOPTIC NV3 detects human heat signatures at distances up to 500 yards under typical field conditions. At 500 yards, the subject will appear as a detectable thermal blob — locatable but not identifiable at that resolution. At 100–200 yards, the 640x480 sensor and 21° field of view resolve enough detail for identification. Detection range varies with ambient temperature (a warm subject against a cool background is easier to detect), heavy rain, and dense vegetation. The operational cycle the NOPTIC enables: detect at range in darkness, close in with thermal guidance, illuminate when adjacent.
Does the NOPTIC NV3 require night vision to work?
No. The NOPTIC NV3 is a standalone thermal imaging system — it does not require night vision goggles or image intensifier tubes. Thermal detects infrared radiation (heat emitted by subjects and objects) rather than reflected visible or near-infrared light. This makes it effective in complete darkness, light fog, smoke, and conditions where image intensifier night vision would struggle. It also works in daylight — thermal does not depend on ambient light levels at all. The built-in lens heater auto-activates below 40°F to prevent condensation during cold-weather operations.
How is the NOPTIC NV3 mounted to a patrol vehicle?
The NOPTIC NV3 mounts to the vehicle's existing spotlight bracket — the same bracket as the standard takedown spotlight. The camera head replaces or co-mounts with the spotlight. Pan and tilt control connects to a joystick controller inside the vehicle, operated through the existing spotlight handle by the officer without leaving the car. The 9-foot standard cable runs to a signal conversion box outputting USB to the MDT or laptop and RCA to any monitor. A 12-foot trunk jumper cable is available for larger vehicles. The system is marine rated and operates in -40°F to 176°F environments.
