The PVS-7: Three Decades of Service
The AN/PVS-7 entered US military service in the mid-1980s, replacing the AN/PVS-5 as the standard infantry night vision goggle. It served as the primary US ground combat NVG through Operation Desert Storm (1990–91), where it demonstrated a decisive capability advantage over forces operating without night vision — a tactical superiority that validated the Army's investment in NVG proliferation across the force.
The PVS-7 is a biocular design — one image intensifier tube, two eyepieces, with a beam-splitter optical system delivering the same image to both eyes simultaneously. This is different from a true binocular, which uses two independent tubes for genuinely stereoscopic vision with depth perception. The PVS-7's biocular format means you see the same image with both eyes — useful for situational awareness and head-mounted stability, but without the depth cues a dual-tube binocular provides.
The biocular format was adopted over a true binocular design primarily for cost. One tube vs. two cuts the procurement price significantly, and in the 1980s and 1990s, Gen 3 tube costs made dual-tube systems prohibitively expensive for mass fielding. The PVS-7 allowed the Army to equip a high percentage of dismounted infantry with NVG capability at a price point that made mass deployment feasible. That trade-off was the right call for its era.
The PVS-14 monocular has largely replaced the PVS-7 in most US military units because of its modularity — helmet-mountable, weapon-mountable, and handheld in a single system. But the PVS-7 remains in service in units where its both-eyes display is valued, and in law enforcement and export applications where its lower cost relative to a comparable dual-tube binocular is the deciding factor. Adams Industries configures PVS-7 systems with current Gen 3 tubes for government, law enforcement, and export customers — the AN/PVS-7 is not offered through our general commercial sales channel.

AN/PVS-7 — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the AN/PVS-7?
The AN/PVS-7 is a biocular night vision goggle using a single Gen 3 image intensifier tube displayed to both eyes simultaneously through a beam-splitter optical system. Unlike a binocular (two independent tubes), a biocular uses one tube and delivers the same image to both eyes. The PVS-7 has been standard US military issue since the mid-1980s, deployed through Desert Storm, OEF, and OIF. It is submersible to 1 meter, nitrogen-purged, and rated to MIL-STD-810G.
What does biocular mean, and how is it different from binocular?
A biocular device uses a single image intensifier tube and delivers the same image to both eyes via a beam-splitter optical system. You see with both eyes, but both eyes are seeing an identical image — no stereoscopic depth perception. A binocular device (like the AEON ANVG or SENTINEL) uses two independent tubes — one per eye — delivering genuinely different images that the brain fuses into a three-dimensional image with depth perception. A biocular costs less because it uses one tube. The PVS-7 is biocular; the SENTINEL is binocular.
What is the difference between the PVS-7 and PVS-14?
The PVS-7 is a biocular goggle — one tube, both eyes, head-mounted with a harness, hands-free operation. The PVS-14 is a monocular — one tube, one eye — lighter and more modular. The PVS-14 can mount on a helmet J-arm, be used handheld, or be weapon-mounted as a clip-on device. The PVS-14 has largely replaced the PVS-7 in most US military units because of its versatility. The PVS-7 remains the better value when weapon-mount capability is not needed and both-eyes display is preferred over single-eye monocular use.
Can you upgrade the tube in a PVS-7?
Yes. Adams Industries offers tube upgrade and overhaul services for the AN/PVS-7. We can install a new Grade A or B Gen 3 image intensifier tube — white or green phosphor — into your existing PVS-7 body, dramatically improving image quality versus an aged original tube. A fresh tube comes with documented specs (FOM, SNR, EBI, resolution) so you know exactly what you are running. Contact us with your serial number and current tube condition for an assessment and quote.
Is the PVS-7 legal for civilian purchase?
Yes. The AN/PVS-7 is legal for US civilian ownership and use. Night vision is ITAR-controlled under Category XII — it cannot be exported without a State Department license and cannot be transferred to foreign nationals even on US soil. Domestic purchase by US citizens and lawful permanent residents is legal. Adams Industries (CAGE 1SMP2) handles all compliance documentation and verifies US person status before any unit ships. We do not ship outside the United States.
What tube options are available in the PVS-7 from Adams Industries?
Adams Industries configures the AN/PVS-7 with new production Gen 3 white phosphor tubes, remanufactured green phosphor tubes, or remanufactured white phosphor tubes. All options are Gen 3 image intensifiers with current autogating power supplies. New production white phosphor delivers the highest contrast and lowest eye fatigue. Remanufactured options provide proven military-grade performance at lower price points. Contact us for current availability and tube specs; individual data sheets are provided with every build.
