What the v2 Housing Actually Changes
The AN/PVS-14 has been the standard US military monocular NVG since the late 1990s. Its image intensifier tube — the core optical component — is unchanged: a Gen 3 18mm tube in a standard housing format. What has evolved is the housing itself, and the PVS-14v2 makes the most important improvements to the original design.
The original PVS-14 uses analog rotary dials for power and gain adjustment. These dials work, but they are a known wear point over extended service. They allow water intrusion at the seals, particularly under sustained immersion. The gain control is not digital — it delivers analog variable resistance, which means the setting is approximate rather than precise. The PVS-14v2 replaces all of this with hardened digital push-button controls. Each button is individually sealed. The gain is controlled digitally with precise stepped increments. There are no exposed mechanical rotary components for water to find.
The IP68+ waterproof rating on the v2 housing is a significant step up from the original PVS-14's water resistance specification. IP68 means the housing is rated for continuous immersion — not splash resistance, not rain resistance. Combined with nitrogen purging (which prevents internal moisture condensation at altitude and temperature extremes), the v2 is genuinely deployable in conditions where the original housing would need careful handling.
The dual-battery power system is the other major differentiator. The standard PVS-14 runs on 1x AA. The v2 housing accepts both 1x AA and 1x CR123A in the same compartment without an adapter. CR123A lithiums provide up to 75 hours of runtime in the v2, roughly double what a AA cell delivers. More importantly, the dual-battery capability means a unit can resupply from the local environment — AA alkaline batteries are available at any gas station in the world, while CR123A availability varies. A device that accepts both is a more operationally flexible device.

How long does the PVS-14v2 battery last?
Up to 75 hours on a single CR123A lithium battery. AA alkaline runtime is shorter — typically 20–30 hours depending on IR illuminator use and ambient temperature. The dual-battery design means you are never locked into one battery type. For cold-weather or extended operations, CR123A lithium is the right choice. For logistics simplicity where CR123A may not be available, the AA slot covers you. Both lithium L91 (AA) and CR123A cells outperform alkaline significantly at freezing temperatures.
